Car Seats in India: The Law, the Sizes, and How to Choose

Two facts decide this purchase, and the showroom will tell you neither. First, how the seat attaches: of the 49 cars in our dataset, 41 have ISOFIX anchors as standard, 2 offer them only on the top variant (Hyundai Grand i10 Nios and Aura), 4 have none on any variant (Maruti Alto K10, S-Presso and Wagon R, and the Renault Kwid), and 2 we could not resolve from published sources. Buy an ISOFIX-only seat for a car in the bottom three groups and it will not fit. Second, which standard the seat is approved to: ECE R44/04 sizes by weight in groups, UN R129 "i-Size" sizes by height and requires rear-facing for longer. Budget roughly ₹4,000–9,000 for a belt-installed convertible, ₹9,000–20,000 for an ISOFIX rotating seat, and ₹20,000–45,000 for an imported i-Size model.

What the law actually requires

Less than most parents assume. The Motor Vehicles Act requires a seat belt for every occupant, front and rear — that part is enforced and carries a fine. The rule that specifically names under-4s is the two-wheeler one: since 2023, a child between roughly 9 months and 4 years riding pillion must have a helmet and a safety harness, with the rider held to 40 km/h. For cars, there is no nationwide rule compelling you to use a child restraint, and this area has been under review for several years — check the current CMVR notifications rather than trusting a blog, including this one.

The real argument for a car seat isn't legal, it's geometric. An adult lap belt sits across a small child's abdomen instead of the pelvis, because the belt was engineered around an adult skeleton. India does have a child restraint standard, AIS-072, and Bharat NCAP now scores child occupant protection separately from adult — which is why ISOFIX has spread so quickly across new models.

Check your car before you check the seat

ISOFIX cannot be retrofitted, so this is the first question, not the last. Our ISOFIX availability reference lists all 49 cars with the source and a confidence rating for each; the raw file is free to download from our open datasets under CC BY. These are the rows where the answer is not a straight yes:

Two more caveats our notes record. On the Ertiga the anchors are on the second-row outboard seats only, with nothing in the third row; on the XL6 they sit on the captain seats. And a car having ISOFIX is not the same as your variant and model year having it — look for the two metal bars in the crease of the rear seat and the top-tether point behind the headrest, and confirm against your own vehicle before you order. Matching a seat to the answer above

If your car is in the table and has no anchors, you need a seat that installs with the vehicle belt — the Loopie Lap convertible is approved to ECE R44/04 and takes either method, rear-facing through Group 0+ and forward to 18 kg in Group 1. The R for Rabbit Jack N Jill Grand also fits both ways, which makes it the safer choice if you swap between two cars. If your car does have anchors and you want the newer standard, the Bonfino Pro Shield is an R129 i-Size seat covering 40–150 cm with rearward use to 105 cm — but it is ISOFIX-only, so the car check is not optional; the full spec sits on its product page.
